Fuel consumption is one of only two main cost drivers for logistics fleets (alongside driver compensation). ZF wanted to enhance its suite of software solutions for these customers with an application allowing to optimize refueling costs.

Task

At the start of the project, ZF had a vast dataset of IoT data from commercial vehicles.The data had to be ingested, cleaned, enhanced and aggregated in such a way that it could be exploited in a SaaS application.

Action

Aloalto set up ETL pipelines to process the data, initially using Cloudera Data Hub but later migrated to Databricks, an operational database and APIs hosted on AWS and participated in the development of a React frontend to expose the data to end customers.

Result

The Fuel Compass application went live with a number of logistics fleets, and fleet managers were able to follow the itineraries followed by their vehicles, analyze their fuel consumption and refueling stops and receive recommendations for future route planning to optimize fuel spend.
